When you’re running an online business, writing blog posts may fall somewhere on the lower end on the marketing spectrum.

But blog posts, and content marketing in general, is a very important part of your overall marketing plan.

Content marketing is the process of strategically creating and distributing content, and using it to attract new customers to your business. It can encompass blog posts, ebooks, webinars and more.

But content marketing takes more than just writing any old content. You need a plan. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you create a content marketing strategy for your business

What is my overall goal for this content?

It could be attracting readers. Or getting email subscribers.  It could even be as simple as informing people. No matter what it is, it’s just important to understand your goal.

Who is my target audience for this content?

You want to make sure your content gets in front of the right people, so defining your audience will help make sure that happens. So think of your ideal customer or target reader. Who are you going to write this content for?

What does my target reader need?

Once you know who your target reader is, it’s important to know what they really need. If you don’t know exactly what those needs are, do some research. Look through other websites or blogs in your industry. Or look through social media. Find the things that your ideal reader is talking about, the questions they are asking. Use this information to build content that solves their problems and attracts them to your blog.

What will make my business different?

You know there are many other businesses in your industry. So what is going to be your special thing? What is it about your content that is just a little bit different from the other content out there? How are you going to set yourself apart?

What are my best channels for marketing my content?

Now that you know who you’re writing your content for and what you’re writing about, it’s important to help it get in front of the right readers. Ask yourself, where does my ideal reader hang out online? This could be Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn. The goal is to match your best marketing channels with your ideal reader to get in front of all the right people.

Online content plays a huge role in business marketing. It has the ability to attract all the right people to your website and convert them into customers. But you have to have a plan. Ask yourself these questions when coming up with your business’ content marketing strategy.
